# Codemotion 2018 @ Roma

Codemotion è tornato in scena come ogni anno, questa volta a Roma nel mese di aprile. A tenere banco, oltre ai nuovi framework JavaScript (😅), sono state soprattutto le novità built-in-the-browser provenienti dal W3C, adottate a ritmo sempre più veloce dai browser maker.

## The Power of the Paradigm

Il web come in origine fu concepito, doveva essere una rete di collegamenti tra documenti ipertestuali, gli sviluppi in chiave commerciale e dinamica hanno messo sempre più in luce la necessità di nuovi e più sicuro protocolli per gestire la centralità di internet. Numerosi player open source stanno dunque reinventando i modi per autenticarsi, comunicare in maniera sicura ma veloce tra due interlocutori sulla rete e molto altro ancora.

## Mind-controlling the Web with Brain-Computer Interfaces

Tutto ciò che serve per interagire con un computer è una interfaccia di input di cui la macchina possa riconoscerne ed interpretarne i segnali. Siamo abituai a mouse e tastiera nonché joypad di vario tipo che fanno uso delle nostre mani, ma stanno iniziando ad essere commercializzate anche delle periferiche in grado di misurare l’attività elettrica del nostro cervello e tradurla in impulsi utilizzabili a livello software. Certo il grado di approssimazione attuale è davvero elevato ma sufficiente per creare interessanti esperimenti.

## Unbundling the JavaScript module bundler

Le web application sono sempre più grandi e complesse, e per gestire tale complessità l’approccio ottimale consiste nell’avere piccoli moduli riutilizzabili da combinare come dei Lego™. Tuttavia siamo ancora il larga parte vincolati dal protocollo HTTP 1.1 che ci richiede di concatenare insieme tutte le risorse necessarie ad una pagina in un unico pacchetto per risparmiare prezioso tempo nel ping-pong di connessioni tra client e server, per questo saper usare un module bundler è importante. Si tratta in genere di uno di quegli aspetti architetturali che nell’ambito di una singola applicazione viene affrontato in genere all’inizio del progetto e di rado modificato, ad ogni modo il metodo migliore per capire come funziona un module bundler e perché è utile è farne uno di propria mano.

## Blockchain, Bitcoin, Ethereum e JavaScript Mining

L’hype che circonda le criptovalute non accenna a sfumare,  in particolare la possibilità di sfruttare la CPU di un visitatore web apre le porte a potenziali nuovi modelli di business dove l’odiosa ma necessaria pubblicità potrebbe essere, forse non sostituita ma quanto meno ridimensionata, grazie a librerie di mining JavaScript.

## Create flexible React applications using GraphQL APIs

Se c’è una tecnologia cha ha saputo conquistare gli onori della cronaca tra gli sviluppatori quella è senz’altro React e ReactJS, tuttavia non è la sola tecnologia rivoluzionaria uscita da Facebook.

GraphQL, forse meno famoso ma non meno importante, rappresenta un approccio *veramente rivoluzionario* per gestire l’interazione tra client e server, ribaltando il paradigma REST dove un client che contatta un server deve conoscere l’endpoint preposto a fornire specifiche informazioni la cui risposta è più o meno sempre la stessa, in gergo di parla di contratto JSON.

Con GraphQL invece il server diventa un interlocutore flessibile, che programmato per reperire vari **tipi** di informazioni, permette tramite un singolo entry point di richiedere informazioni anche di servizi diversi, per poi combinare lato backend le risposte, fornendo un JSON nel formato esatto richiesto dal client, aprendo le porte ad enormi potenzialità in ambito di MVT e gestione di client diversi, come web e nativi, evitando la duplicazione di business logic.

## UX Practitioner’s Guide to Cognitive Theory

Le pagine web non sono tutte uguali ormai lo sappiamo, ed è anche il motivo per cui alcuni ecommerce hanno più successo di molti altri, e volendo riassumere il fattore decisivo del loro successo in una sola parola questa sarebbe “*semplicità*“. Anthonia Carter ci illustra in che modo la teoria cognitiva viene in soccorso degli UX designers, aiutando ad identificare cosa possa rappresentare un ostacolo per la comprensione degli utenti per testi scritti, immagini e gli altri elementi che possono comporre un interfaccia web.

Mentre il mondo del backend ha iniziato da ormai alcuni anni ad abbracciare l’approccio dei micro-servizi come filosofia di piccoli componenti che orchestrati tra loro compongono un prodotto più complesso, il frontend sta iniziando lentamente ad avvicinarsi allo stesso grado di maturità per mezzo di librerie come ReactJS ed Angular fortemente orientate ai così detti “**componenti**“, tuttavia i browser non avevano ancora messo a disposizione degli strumenti “nativi” per sopperire a questa necessità ed ogni libreria ha interpretato questo tema a modo proprio.

Il W3C non è stato inerte, ed i Web Components stanno iniziando ad affacciarsi sui vari browser portando caratteristiche di isolamento e indipendenza rispetto allo scope globale della pagina, e Horacio Gonzales ci illustra come possiamo oggi usare i Web Components per mezzo di librerie come Polymer che si occupano di gestire le differenze implementative attualmente esistenti tra i vari browser, e di effettuare polyfilling sui browser più vecchi.

## Meetup di Developers Italia

Il comparto informatico della tanto bistrattata pubblica amministrazione è senza ombra di dubbio il tallone d’Achille che genera inefficienza e burocrazia in tutti i servizi pubblici Italiani, ma  non deve essere per forza una maledizione a cui arrendersi.

È ciò che ha pensato anche *[Diego Piacentini](https://www.corrierecomunicazioni.it/digital-economy/da-amazon-a-palazzo-chigi-diego-piacentini-commissario-per-il-digitale/)*, ex Vice Presidente di Amazon tornato in Italia specificamente per condurre *pro bono* il nuovo Team Digitale della PA italiana, per riavviare il “*sistema digitale*” del paese, sulla base della filosofia open source.

Il Team di Developers Italia ci illustra quindi la codebase GitHub alla quale qualunque sviluppatore volenteroso può apportare il proprio contributo per gettare le basi di una PA migliore che possa stare al passo coi tempi che cambiano.

## OpenTech AI for everyone

L’intelligenza Artificiale è un argomento che sta diventando sempre più scottante, non solo in termini di interesse per le aziende ma anche delle ricadute per la società, in termini occupazionali ma anche sociali. Romeo Kienzler ci mostra i passi da gigante che l’AI sta compiendo nei campi del riconoscimento semantico del linguaggio naturale umano e del riconoscimento ottico su immagini, mostrando che il confine tra ciò che si riteneva fantascienza e scienza stia diventando sempre più fumoso.

## More than a Game

La sviluppatrice di video games Amie Dansby apre la giornata narrandoci di come una formazione poliedrica, non focalizzata su un unico argomento, apporti benefici inaspettati anche nel proprio lavoro tecnico, sia in termini di esperienze individuali coltivando interessi di varie nature, che unendo persone con diverse esperienze in team multidisciplinari.  

Le occasioni per imparare non mancano mai, la chiave è mantenere sempre una mente flessibile, aperta, e pronta a farsi sorprendere dagli altri.

## What Service Workers can do

Nel tendere continuo del web a colmare il gap con le app native, i Service Workers offrono la potenzialità di scavalcare la natura *single threaded* di JavaScript permettendo di eseguire servizi pertinenti ad una pagina web che operano in maniera indipendente dalla stessa. ## Data Breaches: Barbarians in the Throne Room

L’oro del nuovo millennio non si trova sotto terra ma nelle varie “nuvole” generatesi negli ultimi anni per fornire funzionalità cloud non più soltanto agli utenti ma anche alle aziende, non solo PMI ma sempre più anche grandi aziende. La gestione e manutenzione di datacenter è un attività di per se estremamente complessa quanto fondamentale per mantenere de evolvere attività online e sempre più grandi player iniziano ad adottare le soluzioni proposte da big come Azure di Microsoft o AWS di Amazon per esternalizzare e non dover curare questo esoso aspetto del business, ma possono esserci delle sgradite conseguenze se non fatto oculatamente.

Dave Lewis ci porta una rassegna stampa dei peggiori *databreach* mai avvenuti, che per portata si sono guadagnati le prime pagine dei quotidiani internazionali, e di quali siano state le *root causes* di questi incidenti, che nella maggior parte dei casi vanno dalla banale dimenticanza di cambiare delle configurazioni di default per evitare che chicchessia possa di fatto sfondare una porta aperta, alla semplice negligenza di non controllare se un server cloud con dati sensibili sia ad accesso pubblico o meno.

## Security and OpenSource libraries

È molto facile andare sul terminale e digitare npm install qualcosa , ma ci chiediamo mai quali sono i potenziali rischi a cui ci esponiamo nel farlo?

Il software open source rappresenta una rivoluzione positiva tuttavia non tutti i programmatori che vi gravitano attorno hanno buone intenzioni, Bruno Bossola ci mostra come sia possibile che un package in apparenza innocuo possa contenere componenti malevoli, ad esempio tracciando dati a nostra insaputa, e quali precedenti famosi hanno portato la community a maturare una consapevolezza rispetto a questo problema che continuerà ad accompagnare le librerie open source negli anni a venire.

La realtà aumentata è uno dei campi che ha sempre goduto di particolare attenzione in ambito cinematografico come icona di futuro e fantascienza, Samsung porta la fantascienza nel presente con la tecnologia WebXR che permette al Samsung Browser (aka stock browser sui vari dispositivi Android della compagnia) di usufruire di contenuti tridimensionali in sovrapposizione alle immagini riprese dalla fotocamera.

Quello della realtà aumentata è un campo ancora molto disomogeneo in ambito web mancando un vero e proprio standard condiviso tra le varie aziende high-tech, tuttavia man mano che le singole aziende fanno passi avanti e si definiscono meglio i requisiti dei compromessi arriveranno.
